About the Book    About the Author

“When he asked me to forgive him for everything I thought I could. I said yes and I meant it. But I didn’t realise that night, everything was what he’d take away.”

When Billie May Worthington falls for Evan Skylark she believes she’d do anything, be anything and give everything for him. But can she forgive him when he asks for her world?

Everything twenty one year old Billie knows about life, love, beauty and art are challenged after graduation when she meets Evan, an enigmatic Irish artist with a dark side. Suddenly immersed in Evan’s intense world of artistic brilliance, flying sculptures and sexual obsession, Billie’s carefully planned future is quickly unrecognisable. Spanning London, Paris, Scotland and finally St. Cloud, the South Pacific island they make their home, the young couple chase Evans dreams and run from their past.

But what happens to young obsessive love when unplanned pregnancy reshapes the future? As Billie struggles to cope with the demands of motherhood Evan is forced to deal with the repercussions of a previous mistake that rock their world altering the future forever.

Emotionally gripping and darkly humorous Skylark is an unconventional love story. A novel about what we do for love, of beauty in imperfection, betrayal and the weight of obsession.

Skylark: A Novel by Ruthie Morgan is a stunning first novel dealing with
obsession, betrayal and unconditional love against the odds. Ruthie
Morgan is one of those rare authors that really does have a way with
words. The novel is professionally written and clearly a great deal of
thought has gone into it. I couldn’t help but “attach” myself to the
characters. I laughed and cried, gripped by the story line of one of the
best first novels I have read in years. I hope there is more where this
came from; Ruthie Morgan deserves to be on the bestsellers list with
books like this.

This review is from: Skylark: a novel (Kindle Edition)
This was wholly unexpected and difficult for me to review.

I got the story free and just glanced at the first page and was blown away with the beauty of the story. Some authors have a way with prose that is utterly magical, if you have read Maggie Stiefvater you will know what I mean. Ruthie Morgan has this - prose that is richly evocative of place and emotions and a lyrical almost literary turn of phrase. Absolutely up there with the best of writers. I struggle to name a comparator of similar strength.

The story itself is a love story and on one level is quite intense. The physical relationship between Billie and Evan is very central to the story but there is no embellishment of the sex in the story so although the themes are adult it doesn't have a particularly erotic content. The sex is fully integral to the story.

Although it is an anatomy of a relationship, it is also partly the story of a descent into madness and what really struck a chord was how much I could relate to both Evan and Billies feelings of inadequacy and guilt ( as a wife, mother, husband) as well as a longing for connection to my lover, friends, children. In so many ways, it was incredibly true to life and this is what makes it so engrossing along with the truly beautiful writing.

I read this book for 4.5 hours and finished off the next morning with another few. It is haunting and ultimately hugely emotional. I also liked that this book was engrossing but never tipped over into melodrama.

I get the impression that this is the author's first novel and if so, wow is all I can say. But I cant help wondering if this is a well known author's pseudonym whilst trying out a different genre. The writing really is that good.

Lastly, this is definitely a new adult type romance. Different from a traditional romance, painful, raw and realistic rather than sweet and romantic so if that is what you are looking for then this may not be for you. Otherwise I absolutely recommend this book and I so want this author to succeed. I also hope there is a follow up book or novella to come. I feel almost dry mouthed in my need for one ....
