These free sample chapters from Unchurching: Christianity Without Churchianity take organized church head-on and examine whether institutional churches are actually biblical. The churches described in the Bible were small Christian communities that functioned like spiritual families. Legally speaking, today’s churches have become corporations. We know the early church didn’t have special buildings, paid pastors, weekly sermons, mandatory tithes and offerings and many other things that have become synonymous with today’s organized churches. By adding these things, have we expanded on Jesus’s original intentions for his church or undermined them? The complete version of Unchurching will become available on Kickstarter in June 2016.
Richard Jacobson is an ex-pastor, author, artist and blogger who makes short animated talks that challenge today’s form of church. Over the past few years, his Church Anarchist animated YouTube channel has been growing in popularity as more and more believers find themselves walking away from organized church. However, Richard doesn’t want to see non-churchgoing Christians simply define themselves by what they are not, just believers who “don’t go to church.” He wants to reawaken them to the biblical example of being the church without going to church, to help them find the type of genuine spiritual community for which they were originally created.
